How Soon Should You Begin Prenatal Yoga?

Drita Bronkey is a real estate professional with nearly 20 years of experience. She is a real estate management consultant at Zemer Property Management Consultants in New Mexico. Away from the office, Drita Bronkey likes to practice yoga.

Regular yoga practice can help reduce pregnancy symptoms like headaches, nausea, breathlessness, and backaches. Practicing yoga as an expectant mother can also help you maintain a healthy physical, emotional, and mental state throughout your pregnancy. According to yoga instructors, the second trimester of pregnancy, from week 13, is the ideal time to start practicing yoga. You're less likely to feel ill or exhausted during a yoga session at this point.

A yoga program shouldn't be started until week 20 if you used In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to get pregnant. Yoga instructors advise this since IVF frequently leads to multiple pregnancies, which come with a higher risk of miscarriage, so it's important to be cautious in the first few months of pregnancy.

Starting yoga during your pregnancy's first trimester is OK if your doctor or midwife gives the go-ahead. However, stay away from yoga poses and instead focus on deep breathing and relaxation techniques. You can start practicing poses as your pregnancy advances but ensure that you inquire with your yoga instructor about the positions ideal for your pregnancy stage.
